4. Design for the Present(Partly)
The only possible context for a design is its epoch, its own time. Now, I am a contextual architect, concerned to define the specific relationships between a project and its setting, and between that context and a wider programme of architecture. My definition of the modern is the result of a diagnosis of the cultural and social situation, based on our present knowledge. Modernity is not a historical movement, nor a religion, nor an ideology, just a profound attention and respect for what is going on around me, for the ideas and tendencies that are emerging. Modernity is a phenomenon of continuous emergence, and to be modern is to be sensitive to this. This emergence is transversal, it operates through exteriority. So architecture cannot claim the artistic conditions of spontaneity or subconsciousness or chance as its main values, rather it means one has to know precisely what one is trying to do. This is a process that relates ideas from other disciplines, philosophy, for example, to the domain of architecture. Each project should have this kind of conceptual mobility, being formulated in architectural, plastic, technical or philosophical terms. The rules thus formulated are established through the effort of synthesizing the most clearly defined elements in the analysis. After that analysis, a solution can emerge, not through a general consensus, but through the operation of a personal judgement: architecture, and all designing, is ultimately an act of thought, which the architect articulates.
