American schools include elementary schools, junior high/middle schools, high schools and universities. All carry a concept: education for individuals.

The purpose of homework is to reinforce concepts and apply learned skills, provide time for research, and finish assignments not completed during school hours.

In American schools, teachers will assign work on an appropriate basis and communicate their policies and procedures to students and parents at the beginning of a school year.

Beginning in Grade One students are expected to have homework completed on a due date. Late assignments will be penalized. A parent’s note indicating extenuating circumstances for an incomplete assignment may allow for an extension of time.

When students are absent, they are generally allowed the number of days they were absent to make up the work when they return.

All homework relates to classroom objectives. Teachers see that students understand assignments before leaving class. Assignments are graded and usually promptly returned to the students.

Teachers inform the parents when a student fails to regularly complete work on time. They check with students on the progress of long-term assignments.

The assignments need to be done individually except for those which need group study. Otherwise the behavior will be regarded as cheating. Cheating is considered a very serious behavior and is penalized.

On many occasions, American teachers like students to work together as partners to accomplish goals. Sometimes students need to do research like scientists, but in an easier way. The teacher gives them timely advice and thus the ways of thinking, problem solving and cooperation evolve almost imperceptibly.
