Ever since the advent of the steam engine, the innovations and inventions of engineers have had a profound impact on our way of life.

Electricity gave light to our cities and provided us with many appliances. The invention of the combustion and turbine engines allowed us to move in ways we never thought possible. More recently, the microchip revolutionized the way we communicate and ushered in the information age.

Now, engineers are at the forefront of finding innovative ways to improve people’s quality of life. With this in mind, we have highlighted in this issue some of the cutting-edge research conducted by our faculty members, students and alumni.

Take for example some of the work that’s being done on micro-sensors. These tiny devices will make it possible for us to continuously monitor heart patients with the help of “wearable stethoscopes”. Microsensors contained in these devices can instantly alert doctors to any complications, while enhancing the patient’s mobility and keeping their anxiety levels at bay.

Electronic noses armed with sensors will be able to “sniff out” potential heart complications by analyzing the different compounds of a patient’s breath.

Smart homes can use the same technology to monitor the quality of the surrounding air and water and take preventative action if something is amiss. We can also expect these high-tech homes to become fire-resistant in the next 10 years while detecting and withstanding earth tremors.

Such applications will provide people with a high degree of safety and prevent many diseases that result from pollution.

While systems engineers are busy working with micro-sensors, industrial designers are ensuring these sensor-driven tools are accessible and easy to use.

These characteristics become increasingly important as more people approach their golden years. In light of this demographic shift, designers have had to reshape and remould tools that we depend on everyday. In doing so, designers are making such tools more user-friendly as they rethink the environment in which we live.

Let us not forget about the environmental engineers who are busily ensuring the air we breathe and the water we drink are of the highest quality. In this issue, we check up on Thomas Baumann, a recent Carleton grad who is on the forefront of climate change research.

really?

原创?

How to improve the quality of our lives?? Well.. i think many equate it with having money, Cos People never be satisfied with what they have, they should always want something new or something different. But sometimes i feel it doesn't address everything we want in our lives such as our physical and mental health. Frankly. im also doubtful about this point... hehe..

Please enjoy this issue of ingenious.
