Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,

This time when I said “Good afternoon” to you is not just for greetings or manners, but also because we really have had a wonderful afternoon. This afternoon we have announced the establishment of the Joint International Laboratory jointly developed by BUPT and Queen Mary. The Laboratory will focus on the study of the electromagnetic theory and its applications in the area of communication. This afternoon BUPT and Queen Mary have signed the Memorandum of Understanding so as to enable the further and more intensive cooperation between two universities. It is also this afternoon that we have awarded the Honorary Professorship to Professor Adrian·Smith. Now both of us have come along to this reporting hall and come up to this platform.

I believe that the most holy place in the university is her platform, for it is here that the truth is spread, and the audience here have the brilliant future.

The purest place in the university is also her platform, for here no fetish and fallacy is allowed. Here you can never find the phenomenon “confusing truth and falsehood” that you can find in the corrupt officialdom.

The most valuable place for professors and lecturers is still this platform, just as what the racing field means to sports stars and what the stage means to talented actors.

The successful persons, including politicians, scientists, educators, entrepreneurs and heroes are always agreeable to accept the invitation to the platform of the university, sharing their knowledge about the world and their experience about the life with young students. Some of them even choose the platform of the university as their ultimate working place to continue their noble career.

When a university wants to show her welcome to the distinguished guests, the warmest and most honorable hospitality is to provide this holy platform to them.

Today the distinguished guest who will walk up to the platform of BUPT is this famous mathematician, influential educator and principal of Queen Mary, professor Adrian·Smith. His topic for today is The International Dimension of Higher Education.
