Welcome to Valparaiso, the venue of the Twentieth Session of the International Coordination Group for the Tsunami Warning System in the Pacific (ICG/ITSU-XX).The Session will be held at the "Gala Hotel ", located at Arlegui 273 in Vina del Mar.

This 20th Session is a milestone in several ways. First of all because of the number "20". Established in 1968, the ITSU programme, its ICG/ITSU and ITIC (International Tsunami Information Center) have been safeguarding the countries bordering the Pacific Ocean for nearly 40 years.

However nobody can forget the horrible images of the impact of the 26 December 2004 tsunami that killed nearly 200,000 people in several countries around the Indian Ocean, made many more homeless and caused tremendous damage. Many tsunami experts who have been involved in ITSU for many years have offered their expertise throughout 2005 to assist countries in the Indian Ocean to establish national tsunami warning and mitigation systems to protect their populations, as well as in developing a regional coordination framework (the IOTWS).

Early on in 2005 the IOC was requested by the international community to play a leading role in the effort to establish an "IOTWS". During the 23rd Session of the IOC Assembly (June 2005) several resolutions were adopted that established "Intergovernmental Coordinatio Groups" for not only the Indian Ocean region but also for the Caribbean and adjacent regions and for the North east Atlantic and Meditarrenean region. In addition a resolution was adopted that will seek to develop a global framework.

These developments will obviously have an impact on ITSU. During its twentieth Session the ICG/ITSU will need to consider not only the achievements in the Pacific region during the past inter-sessional period, but will also need to plan for the future taking into consideration this new framework composed of multiple regional tsunami warning and mitigation systems. The ICG may also wish to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the current system both at the national and regional level, learning from the extensive work now being carried out in the Indian Ocean.
