Guess the Christmas Character
Write names of Christmas characters (i.e. Kris Kringle, The Grinch, Wise Man, etc.) on masking tape and put them on people’s backs when they come in. They are to ask only yes or no questions to others at the party in order to figure out who they are. They are only allowed to ask one question each person at the party (this causes them to have to mingle and meet others). Goal is to figure out who you are.

White Elephant Gift Exchange
Everyone brings a "gift" which is really an item you find in your home or garage that you don’t want and that you wrap up as a gift. You put all the gifts in a pile then people line up. The first person picks a gift and opens it, the next person can either take the first person’s gift or pick a new one. This continues on down the line until you reach the last person who has the choice of all the gifts or the last gift. Key: Everyone must bring a gift so you might want to have some extra wrapped gifts on hand in case someone forgets to bring their gift.

Everyone is asked to bring an ornament and decorate the Christmas Tree.

Christmas Cookie Decorating Contest
Have baked cookies available with stuff to decorate them and then judge who has the "Most Christmassy," "Most Unique," etc.

Human Christmas Tree
Have competitions between classes where each group is given a bag that contains Christmas Tree decorations (lights, ornaments, etc.). Each team chooses one person in the group to be the tree and everyone else decorates him. After 10 minutes a judge or the crowd decides who has the most creative/best "Christmas tree."

Option One: The Greatest Gift of All
Four students volunteer ahead of time. The first student stands up and says: "If I could give you one gift at Christmas I would give you unconditional love because …" [student states why and sits down].

The second student stands up and says "If I could give you one gift at Christmas I would give you joy because …"

The third student stands and repeats "If I could give you one gift at Christmas I would give you peace because …"

The fourth student stands up and says: "If I could give you one gift at Christmas I would give you the gift of a relationship with Jesus Christ because in Him we receive all these other gifts - unconditional love, joy and peace."

The first student stands up again and says: "In Jesus we receive unconditional love because God said that ‘while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’"

The second student stands up and says: "In Jesus we receive joy because Jesus said that He came that we might have a life that was meaningful and full of joy."

The third student stands and says: "In Jesus we receive peace because He said: ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.’"

Christmas Party.

The fourth student explains: "Not only do we have these gifts, but in Jesus we receive the gift of eternal life for the Bible says: ‘Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent’ (John 17:3, NIV). Those who are giving this party have each found this relationship with God that results in eternal life and we want to give this to you as a gift this Christmas."

Nearly 2000 years ago God gave us the gift of His Son at the very first Christmas. Why don’t people have this gift?

Read Romans 3:23.
God created us to have fellowship with Him, but we have turned away.

Jesus died in our place on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins.

Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-6.
Jesus rose from the dead proving He could give us eternal life. This is why we celebrate Easter.

Read John 1:12 and Ephesians 2:8,9.
God has given us a precious gift – eternal life. That gift comes to us by placing our faith or trust in Jesus as our Savior and Lord. Just as you have gifts under your tree at Christmas, there is nothing we can do to earn it. We have a choice whether or not to receive that gift.
Sample Prayer

If you would like to receive the gift of eternal life by asking Jesus to come into your life say something like this to God ; Remember that this is between you and God. For the sake of those who desire to pray have everyone bow their heads and pray silently with you:
"Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving me of my sins and giving me the gift of eternal life. Take control of my life and make me the kind of person you want me to be. Amen."

Option Two: Read the Christmas Story (Luke 2:1-20)

(After reading the Scripture, briefly explain the significance of the story.)

Over 700 hundred years before Christ’s birth a prophet named Isaiah wrote, "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a Son, and will call Him Emmanuel" (Isaiah 7:14). The word "Immune" means "God with us."

Then, 800 years later this prophecy was fulfilled when God became a man in Jesus Christ. A later prophet, John wrote, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have see His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth" ( John 1:14).

So we see that the real meaning of Christmas is the Birth of God’s only Son, Jesus. But, why did God become a man? John later writes: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" ( John 3:16).

God sent "Immune" (God with us) because He desired to have a personal relationship with us. If that is true, why is it that we don’t experience God in our lives?

According to Romans 3:23, God created us to have fellowship with Him, but we have turned away from God. Isaiah says this also: "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way" ( Isaiah 53:6a).

As Romans 6:23 says, "The wages of sin is death" (spiritual separation from God). God provided His Son as a way of taking away our sin. Isaiah goes on to say in verse 6b: "and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity (sin) of us all." (See other verses in Isaiah 53.) Jesus died in our place on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins.

Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-6. Jesus rose from the dead proving He could give us eternal life. This is why we celebrate another holiday – Easter.

(Refer back to the Luke passage. )The shepherds heard the good news about Jesus and searched to find Him. In the same way we can hear the good news about Christ, but we need to make a decision. The shepherds and wise-men came and worshipped God’s son. To worship God is to allow Him to come into our hearts and to make Him our Lord and Savior. To do so will result in "exceeding great joy!"

This Christmas, why not experience the real meaning of Christmas? 1 John 1:12 promises us that "As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name."

The following is a suggested prayer (use prayer above to close). Remember that this is between you and God. For the sake of those who desire to pray have everyone bow their heads and pray silently with you:

Option Three: One particular relationship and one particular gift

Speaker: Banter with students about their families’ Christmas traditions, fun things they do, what they eat, how they decorate the tree, etc.

Talk:
I’ve noticed a common thread running through most of your comments about Christmas traditions: relationships and gifts. It’s interesting because these are ideas I’d like to share with you this afternoon—one particular relationship and one particular gift.

How many of you like to receive and give gifts? I do! Let’s just take a minute to go over some of the ingredients of gift giving. First, there must be someone who does the giving. Second, there’s something to be given, And, third, there must be someone to accept or receive the gift. Now let’s look at the characteristics of each:

The giver gives to express love or care. He usually gives with some sacrifice or cost to himself. Second, the gift is something given for a particular purpose, to fulfill a need. The gift is free, unearned, undeserved, and unconditional. There are no strings attached—it’s just given. Third, the recipient must accept the gift, thus claiming it as his own possession. [Offer some small gifts to students, reiterating the idea that a gift must be accepted.]

The particular gift that I’d like to talk about today has had your name on it for a long time—2000 years. It was given just for you, because you are greatly loved. That gift is Jesus Christ. He was sent to earth as a baby, grew to be a man and died on the cross because God loves you and me. But why did God send this special gift? What was the purpose of the gift?

In the beginning, God created man and woman to have an intimate, loving relationship with Him. He created man and woman in His own image and loved them. But as you know, Adam and Eve disobeyed the one rule that God set down—and as a result sin entered the world. Sin is anything that separates us from God.

Because of their sin, Adam and Eve’s relationship with God was damaged and broken. But God never stopped loving them. From that time on, God has longed to restore that healthy, intimate, loving relationship with man—for us to be reconciled to Him. You and I are separated and prevented from having that relationship with God because of our sin. But again, God still loves you and me.

God had a plan to restore us back to relationship with Him. In the Bible we read, “For God so loved the world [you and me] that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

God gave us a gift, His only Son, Jesus Christ, because He loves you and me, and because He sees our greatest and deepest need: the need to have an intimate, loving relationship with Him, to be reconciled to Him. [pause]

Lets check what I’ve said about the giver and the gift with my earlier comments:

First the giver, God, gave you and me a gift. It was given with the greatest amount of love and the greatest amount of sacrifice.

Second, the gift, Jesus Christ, has a purpose. That is to restore our broken relationship with God and assure us of eternal life. He is free. He cannot be earned or deserved, no matter how many “good deeds” we may do. And He will never be withheld from us, no matter how much we may have sinned. He comes with no strings attached.

Third, what about the recipient? That’s you! You can read the Christmas story, sing the carols, go to church, participate 100% in the religious celebration of Christmas, but the gift of Jesus Christ will only be yours when and if you accept Him, possess Him and claim Him as your own Savior. Then, and only then, will you have that personal relationship with God.

What I discovered is that Christianity is not a religion—what church you go to, what prayers you say or which holy days you celebrate—Christianity is a personal relationship between GOD—Jesus Christ—and you.

This gift has been “under your tree” every day of your life, waiting to be opened and accepted. Jesus Christ will wait for you to accept Him. He says: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him and he with Me.” Jesus will never force Himself upon you. You exercise your free will in accepting Him or not.

Let me illustrate with this simple example. I brought a gift with me today. Here it is all wrapped up. It may look like one you have under your tree. I would like to give it to one of you. There are no strings attached. All I need is someone here who will accept it. Would anyone like it? [Someone accepts it.] The gift is now yours. But before it became yours, what did you have to do? [accept it] My illustration breaks down somewhat since I don’t have enough gifts for everyone. I only brought one. But this does illustrate what God has done. He has offered us a free gift. All we must do is accept it.

I want to make something else very clear here. The Bible tells us that God will never force us to receive His gift. The decision is always ours. There is a verse that says, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come in . . .”

Today Christ is in one of two places: He is either in your heart and life, because at some time in your life you received His gift of love and forgiveness; or He is at your heart’s door right now. If you’ve never accepted this gift or aren’t sure if you have, I am going to pray in a moment, and I’d like you to pray with me in your heart.

“Jesus, I thank You that You are God’s gift to me. I want to open my heart and life to You and accept the gift of eternal life that You so freely give. Thank You so much for loving me. Amen.”
