Born in the 1850s, my mother has experienced the ups and downs in China. Maybe she is very common in the eyes of most people, but she is the greatest person in my mind, not for the life she gave me, but for her selfless and great love for life.
My mother was born in a poor family with 6 sisters and brothers, a large family for my grandparents to feed in that special time in China. In order to feed the whole family, she was out digging the wild vegetables and working in the field with the men on the farm. Famine is the biggest problem at that time. In spite of the low tuition fees, she was deprived of the right of schooling. So I call her the “lost generation.’
As she grown up, she married with my father poor but handsome man. Later, she gave birth to us sisters and brothers 4. None knows how much she has suffered in order to bring us up. To provide us with food and clothes as well as the chance to receive the formal education, she has to save and earn money through hard work. While my peers were playing or doing homework, I had to work with my parents in the field, or to look after my younger sister or brother. So night was the most precious time for me to study. Mother had tried her best to let us feel as happy as our buddies, so she put more emphasis on our education. No matter how poor, we brothers and sisters can pay the tuition fee on time.
All her efforts have been paid off, we four all grown up and developed very well. She herself can still not rest. I feel regret for not taking care of her, because I am working in another place that is far from her. Wish her happy and healthy in the left time!

She was in a pantsuit of thin silk material, bright red with a striking interplay of yellow and blue. From a distance, I could only make out an oval face; a gem-studded necklace glittered on her neck.
