German Traffic Information (中文的你自己去翻吧)

Driving in Germany - Basic rules and information

Here you can find basic traffic rules that apply in Germany at a glance. For further information please use the linklist below.

Speed limits: unless otherwise stated, the general speed limit in cities and towns is 50 km/h, on two-laned highways 100 km/h (80 km/h for cars towing a trailer and trucks with a total weight of not more than 7,5 tons, 60 km/h for trucks with a total weight of more than 7,5 tons) and on autobahns and "Kraftfahrstraßen" (expressways) a recommended speed limit of 130 km/h applies. Trucks and cars towing trailers must not drive faster than 80 km/h, even on autobahns. Busses and cars towing trailers can get a special permission to drive 100 km/h on autobahns. Vehicles with a conceptional top speed lower than 60 km/h (mopeds for example) are not allowed to enter an autobahn. In residential areas you can often find "Zone30"-areas (see picture), where a top speed of only 30 km/h is allowed especially to protect playing children and pedestrians. This speed limit does not have to be renewed, it applies until it is cancelled.
"Rechtsfahrgebot": vehicles must use the right lane and switch lanes only for passing others. Overtaking is only allowed by using a lane to the left of the other car, except in stationary traffic. Passing must be done as quickly as possible.
Right-of-way: a police officer directing traffic overrides all other traffic controls. Traffic signals are the next highest right-of-way control, followed by signs (see picture with "priority road" sign, for further information on traffic signs in Germany please read the explanations on texhwyman.com). If none of these traffic controls indicates the right-of-way, the "Rechts-vor-links-Regelung" ("Right has Right-of-way-rule") applies: when two public roads cross, then right-of-way is always given to traffic approaching from the right.
Mobile phones: the use of mobile phones is prohibited while operating a vehicle (as soon as the engine is started), except if you use a handsfree set or a handsfree phone.
Seat belts: seatbelts must be worn by all passengers. Children under 12 years old and smaller than one and a half meters may not sit in the front seat unless they are seated in a child safety seat.
Blood alcohol limit: it is illegal to operate a vehicle if the blood alcohol level is 0.5 per mill or higher, if you are involved in an accident or have an insecure driving style the limit is 0.3 per mill.
Driving license: if you are visiting Germany, your valid driving license will also be valid in Germany. If you have a license from a non-EU member country that is not written in German language you must carry an international driving license or an official German translation with you.
Snow chains: when driving in mountaneous regions in the winter, you should carry snow chains with you. They have to be attached when the snow chain sign shows up (see picture with "snow chains required" sign). Snow chains can be rented from gas stations and the ADAC (german automobile club). With attached snow chains the speed limit is 50 km/h.
Special rules for motorcycles: drivers and passengers on all kinds of motorcycles have to wear helmets. All kinds of motorcycles have to drive with active low-beam lights all the time.
Special rules for trucks: most motor trucks are not allowed to be operated on sundays and public holidays between midnight and 10 pm.
TÜV: all automobiles have to be inspected once every two years by the Technical Inspection Association "TÜV" to receive two decals (see picture with TÜV decal) that indicate that your car is technically viable for traffic and complies with the requirements of environmental laws.

Insurances: at least a third-party insurance is compulsory.
Types of fuel: Normalbenzin (unleaded gasoline 91-92 octane), Super (unleaded gasoline 95-96 octane), Super plus (unleaded gasoline 98-100 octane), Diesel and Bio-Diesel. Leaded fuel is not sold anymore since 1996. There are some fuel stations that also sell natural gas (for example some public transport busses are driven with it) and hydrogen.
Accidents and congestions: if you are involved in an accident stop your car immediatedly and move it (if possible) to the right side of the road, place a warning triangle (which has to be in the trunk of your car) in 100m distance of your car (200m on autobahns) to warn other drivers, switch on your emergency flash lights and call the police. Dial 110 from a cell phone, or if available follow the black arrows on the posts along the roadside to the next emergency phone (see picture with emergency phone). When you reach a congestion, switch on your emergency flash lights to warn drivers behind. In a congestion you should leave some space for emergency cars, police and firefighters between the left lane and the lane on the right to it.
Fines: some examples for fines for traffic offenses (date: march 2004):
you passed a junction at red lights: 50-200 Euro.
