The theory behind this is that a pattern-search system has no knowledge of the contents of the packets, and must search each packet for many different patterns. In contrast, a protocol-analysis system knows the contents of the packet, and only tests signatures that apply to those contents. Although this may sound like a huge advantage, it should be remembered that full protocol decodes take significantly more processing power than simple pattern matching, rendering the actual differences in performance less than one might imagine.
