The Language of Music

A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm—two entirely different movements.

Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear.

This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority.

Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.

Duty report
Hello everyone. Today, I would like to tell you some other English examination, including something like the TOEFL and GRE.

As everyone knows, if you want to go abroad for some further study in American or Canadian colleges and universities, especially of getting a Bachelor or Master Degree, you will enter these two tests inevitably. So, what are these two tests?

TOEFL is the acronym of Test of English as a Foreign Language. The TOEFL test is a requirement for admission of colleges and universities where instruction is in English. In addition, many government, licensing, and certification agencies, exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language. So, there are more and more Chinese high school students who want to enter the university in North America prefer to take the TOEFL test. TOEFL test consists of 4 parts including TWE (writing examination), Listening, Grammar, and reading comprehension. Test takers will be required to finish each part in given time limits, and they could not go to other sections in those time limits even if they have already finished the given section. The score of TOEFL is ranked from 310 to 677, the score of TWE which ranked form 0 to 6 will not be included. In all these sections, Listening comprehension is the most difficult section to our Chinese students.

GRE means Graduate Record Examination, which is the admission of American graduate schools in universities or colleges. This test include 3 parts, AW (analytical writing), V (verb) and Q (quantitative), each measures the ability of analytical writing, vocabulary reasoning, and quantitative reasoning. GRE test is really a hard nut to crack, because one who wants to overcome it must grasp nearly 20,000 new words in not a long time. But to me AW was the most difficult one, I do poor work in that part.

At last, I want to say, nothing is impossible (I am possible), when I was first confront with these two tests, I fell no means to do good job. But after several months practice, I become stronger and not afraid of them at all. You know, to everything, practice make perfect! So, when we are all in these beautiful young ages, why not study abroad? Please, never say never!

(Hope it's helpful.)
