reason 可以和that和why 连用,如果从句可以找到事件原因的话,就用why;从句找不到原因的话,就用that.例如:
1.The reason why he can't come is that his mother is ill.
在这个句子中,我们知道他不能来的原因是他母亲病了,找到原因了,句子用why连接;后面的句子"他母亲病了",找不到他母亲为什么病的原因,所以句子用that连接.
2.The reson why I want to join the army is that I can eat enough.
所以,你的原句中前半句也是有问题的.
