² 有些英语的不及物动词，可以接上语形相同，或语意相似的名词做宾语，语法上叫「同源宾语 cognate object」。这些宾语，通常都带有形容词等修饰语，以加重述语的份量。例句：

1) He slept a sound sleep ( =slept soundly).（不可改为：A sound sleep was slept by him.）

2) She laughed a merry laugh( =laughed merrily). （不可改为：A hearty laugh was laughed by her.）

3) I dreamed a beautiful dream last night.

4) He died a natural death.

5) The king lived a life of an exile.

6) They are running a race.

7) They fought a brave battle.

8) We have struck a blow for freedom.

9) She smiled ( a smile of )thanks ( =expressed her thanks by smiling).

10) He nodded ( a node of ) his approval ( =nodded approvingly ).

●偶尔，含有同源宾语的句子，也可以改为被动句，例如：(1) His last fight was fought in that home. (2) Life cannot be lived without much charity.

² 最高级形容词后面的同源宾语，常省去。

例句：

1) He breathed his last ( breath ).

2) They shouted their loudest ( shout ).

3) He was trying his best to marry her.
