Entrance halls and staircases

Dining rooms
The dining room shrank in the new houses of the interwar years,as did the meals taken in it. The spacious and dignified dining room gave way to an alcove at one end of the living room or to a kitchen-dining room.Gateleg,drop-leaf and folding tables were very common because they could be tidied away to save space when not in use.Marian Speyer,a mid-1930s writer,commented in Design for To-day that the starker modernists enjoy their calories in the ultra-hygienic surroundings of cellulose and glass…The disintegration has clearly set in.A few sensitised tablets taken in a couple of minutes may be all that is shortly left of the elaborate process once connected with dining and supping.The dining room may remain only as an historical memory.
‘Majik’brand dining tables could be extended when necessary with a gentle pull at each end to reveal two hidden leaves.The range also included sideboards,cupboards and service tables(which could also be used as writing desks).The last had a sliding top covering a partitioned cutlery and stationery tray,service extensions to the top and,at the ends,bookcases with hinged tray tops or revolving canteen cupboards.These items were made in various designs and sizes in oak,walnut or mahogany,The manufacturer also produced sectional bookcases,desks and easy chairs,so that the whole living room could be furnished with matching items.
