The very high delivery pressures needed to operate state-of-the-art gas turbines and the short-term (15-minute) electric market price signals that they respond to will prove a great challenge for pipeline gas control and compressor station operators. This power plant customer set will begin to dominate operational planning, and unit sizes are such that a typical, ordinary 250 MW gas turbine has a gas consumption rate of about 51 MMcf/day. About 120 of these projects have been announced for installation in New England over the next three years. Certainly not all of these will actually be built, but the manner in which they will respond to short-term electric market opportunities (many of these units are designed to operate as peaking plants) provides insight into the challenge they pose for pipelines. In fact, some of the larger projects will have a total gas demand similar to an entire gas distribution company--but may switch on and off throughout the day as it chases fleeting market opportunities. This type of volatility simply has not yet been experienced on the system-particularly at the end of the pipeline.
