Growing up poor in Timmins , Ontario , I remember my parents being unable to afford groceries or buy gas for the car, and the heat being shut off when it was 40 degrees below zero because we could not pay the bill. But through it all Dad refused any help. He believed in toughing it out with the little we had. “There's no way I'm going to depend on welfare ,” he would say. It too easily becomes a way of life and gets passed from generation to generation.
