看了楼主的补充说明，可以很肯定的说，catch在这里是泛指二方或多方互相扔来扔去的游戏。这种扔来扔去的游戏很多(参见下面网址)。不光是棒球或橄染球，还有许多更小的适合近距离玩的球。而且要特别指出的是。一般美国人的后院决不会大到可以扔棒球玩那么大的程度。美国人球扔棒球都是要去游戏场(playground)或公园才行。后院不够大的。

楼主可否把原文拿出来，光说一个catch只有下面这个意思。但任何扔出去、接住的都可叫catch game.像人同狗玩时扔东西要狗去接，都是叫catch。所以楼主句子中可能不是这个意思。还有，catch有play trick的意思。
