短文的一部分是这样的：
My grandfather had taught music for nearly forty years and,though much beloved and respected,earned barely enough to provide for his large family.
As a consequence,the very mention of music as a profession carried with it a picture of uncertain financial rewards.
意思我理解了，书上有翻译。但是第二句的句子结构很是不理解，而且carry 在这里怎么解释，这里的“it”又指代的是什么？？？
