I'm afraid to die. (我怕死。意思就是说害怕死亡本身)
I'm afraid of dying(我怕死掉。言外之意是害怕死亡带来的后果，如自己死了，妻子儿女父母没有人去照顾他们了，也许自己并不怕死亡本身，)
所以你举的例子可以理解为前者of singing 也许是他歌唱得很好，但是由于得罪了歌迷，害怕歌迷仍砖头。 to sing 就是由于他怯懦没有胆量唱歌，因为不会唱。
意思不同
be afraid of sth 是不情愿做某事
而be afraid to do sth 是害怕做某事。
不行， 只有be afraid of sth 或be afraid of doing sth，这是固定搭配
