DPSA was formed in 1984 by disabled people who saw the need for a representative body to plan and implement programmes of benefit to disabled people with a members of 150 self help groups/member organisations, DPSA is the democratic cross-disability umbrella body of organisations of people with disabilities in South Africa, recognised as the National Assembly of Disabled People by Disabled Peoples` International (DPI), which has observer status in the United Nations.
