Modern technologies are best implemented first in small vehicles rather than in automobiles because
the risk is much smaller due to the smaller project size and the higher price of those small vehicles per
unit weight than automobiles.
This paper presents a modular system for the propulsion of small vehicles that uses the PowerNet
42V standard for its main DC net and a CAN-bus for the information distribution to the modular
components of the drive system. The system was developed at the University of Applied Sciences in
Berne for autork ltd., a start-up company.

Development-goals were: good performance-to-price-ratio, safety, modularity, scalability. The
system is ready to be applied to customer applications like (bi)cycles, mopeds, scooters, fork lifts,
golf carts, wheelchairs, etc.

A prominent application of this system is the chainless series hybrid electronic cycle. For the
elimination of the traditional chain on e-cycles autork won the Wall Street Journal Europe Innovation
Award 2001 in the category Business/Transportation
