Confusion. Chinese New Year just round the corner, time to dish out red pockets to those unhitched individuals I come across on a regular basis. Or so i thought…

Apparently, the rules for giving Hong baos aren’t the same here on the mainland as they were when i was living in Hong Kong. That’s if my teachers and other various Beijingren are to be believed of course. Supposedly, the tradition of giving red pockets after Spring festival is now pretty much left to grandparents giving their grandchildren, and not as widespread, or indeed, expected as it now is in Hong kong.

The grandkids can then in turn use the much-awaited windfall to blow on as many diabetes-inducing sugar apples on a stick as they can possibly carry, before continuing the never-ending rounds of eat-visit-eat-visit that is standard for all around this time of year.

So perhaps that means I no longer need to effectuate the massive cull of domestic staff chez Wanbro…
