礼貌点、客气点！can、may都表现不出这一点。
汉语中表示礼貌客气的所谓的“想知道”在英语其时就是请求，不该直译。另外，英语里我想帮助人时以我为主（我作主语），所以最常见的说法是：Can I help you？而汉语却说“您需要帮助吗？”。这时以自己为主是给对方面子了。需要对方帮助时以对方为主（用you作主语），所以英语是“Would you please tell me her number?”，汉语却可能说“我想知道您能否告诉我她的号码？”。以对方为主表示对对方的尊重。东西方文化的差异绝非三言两语能说得清道得明的。这里面只得探究的问题还有很多，而且也很有趣。

用birthday不算错，但是不是最标准。
